Luzia-Maria Derks

The pleasure of discovering and collecting little treasures like candy wrappers accompanied me since my early childhood. Outgoing from this passion I developed a form of recycling to oppose the headless waste of packaging. The wrapping is not only a shelter of products but also a visual sensation which lends wings to my imagination.

The issue "light" in all its facets but also selfportrait are keynotes of my artistic work. I am under a spell of glitter, sparkling lights and reflection. Finds and everyday objects like cats’s eyes, wrappers, blisterfoil and disposable lighter are the material of my artistic work. By alienation of the aquainted context I try to seduce the observer to change his point of view to an enhanced perspective on reality.

Some of my artistic pieces are referring to their surrounding. Often in reference to architecture, like I did with the windowpieces out of blisterfoil in the medical center, or with the installation „Cat’s eyes“ in the parking garage for cycles in Münster.

The serie „Hommage to Gustav Klimt“ applies to the paintings of the Austrian artist, who is well known as a leading person of Art Nouveau. Out of candy wrappers I created a shiny background with colourful and decorative ornament...

Luzia-Maria Derks studied Arts at the Kunstakademie Münster from 1992 to 2000. She enrolled during the period from 1992 to 1995 under the tuition of Gunther Keusen and visiting professor Ingrid Roschek. From 1995 onwards she joined the class of Joachim Bandau and graduated with honors in 1999. Luzia-Maria Derks finished her education as a master student of Timm Ullrichs.
