Carl Berman was born in New York City in 1915 and was interested in art from childhood. While working in Peru, he became intrigued with the ancient weaving techniques still practiced by the women of the Andes. It was then that he began his lifelong documentation of the "People of the High Plateau," crisscrossing the world in search of these rich cultures in their hard scrabble settings, across continents, decades and through a world war. In addition to his paintings and diaries, he collected the costumes and artifacts he observed.
In 1975, Carl Berman moved to Charlottesville, Virginia.
Carl Berman spent 50 years tracking the lifeways of the "People of the High Plateau," the ancient tribes who live along the rooftop of the world. With sketch-book and diary, canvas and paint, he created a living record of these remarkable inhabitants of the remote and desolate mountain regions of Asia and the Americas.
From his first trek into the Andes of South America in 1939 to his visit to the high reaches of the Himalayas of Bhutan in 1984, he sought out these complex, beautifully costumed people in order to capture and chronicle their rapidly disappearing way of life.
