Gabby Malpas

I work with watercolour on paper and canvas. Although my work could be interpreted as purely decorative, I weave stories into it based on my experiences as trans-racial, Asian adoptee. Some of my messages and themes may be a little confronting but I temper this with engaging and lavish imagery that echo the Dutch still life genre. Many of my images are of things I have found in Sydney: items familiar to most viewers but with unexpected elements. A joyful and chaotic assemblage of blooms and fruit displayed with a collection of ceramics from anywhere and everywhere but with a narrative that draws the viewer in for a second look.
