Sauters current artwork digital paintings-- juxtaposes the human figure and a landscape to suggest narrative possibilities. These works display not only an obsessive interest in materials beads, paper, and computer generated images-- but also a very formal concern for spatial and color relationships. His inspirations include Derek Wolcott, George Simenon, Robert Bray, Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Harold Gregor. He has exhibited most recently at the Timothy Kent Gallery, the BroMenn Regional Medical Center, and at Illinois Wesleyan University, all located in Bloomington, Illinois.
Spencer Sauter graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University with degrees in English and Art and from Illinois State University with a Masters Degree in Art.
Sauter has worked as a truck driver, cook, refrigeration/air-conditioning parts counter man, book seller, data entry person, catalog designer, purchasing agent, graphic and web-site designer, teacher, as well as freelance writer. (He wrote for Bloomington/Normals daily newspaper, The Pantagraph, reviewing theater, art, and music for nearly 10 years, and for University Communications at IWU.)
