About Kate Milsom
My work is rooted in the past, quite obviously - not simply because it uses the imagery of the past but also by using the same techniques and chemical processes. Having worked in restoration for many years I have developed an abhorance of acrylic anything - I understand and respect materials - pigments, binders and construction that is meant to outlive it's maker. I have long since stopped worrying that this may be an unfashionable point of view, for me it is about the quality of the colour and richness and depth of pigment.
I lived in Venice for 4 months in 2006, and what began there as a series of small, intricate, mixed-media pieces, roughly postcard-sized (an appropriate response to living in a city that survives largely on tourism) developed into a journal of sorts. The imagery used was the ephemera of the city, the endless "˜floor paper' of thrown away maps and museum guides. The usage was to illustrate a fragmented existence of displacement and loss of verbal language.
Since this time the work has become larger but the practice of using "˜scraps' of the past to comment on my own experience, and also the unchanging nature of human interaction and unspoken communication, has remained. Also prevalent, a hang-over from my days painstakingly drawing carpet designs for English Heritage projects, is an absorption in the opulence of pattern and a fascination for the symbolic references attributed to particualr objects, which I combine to create these "intricate scenes of social malfunction".
