Whether I'm working on a silhouette painting or a surreal idea, I'm working toward a goal of creating more than a pleasing picture. I am relying on our desires to know the truth, focus the blurred, and piece together what doesn't make sense.
When I create silhouette paintings, I often use real plants, limbs, leaves, and flowers for that ultra-real effect, while still allowing for the thrill of discovery. Some silhouettes are sharp and up front while others are recessed and beckon you to lean closer. I love the surprise of how shadows emerge into shapes unintended, and how viewers will point out something I didn't even notice.
Surreal art can just be a twist of color or putting things together that don't normally relate, rearranging how we think. Just like a poem or song, your interpretation is subjective and the feelings personal. As you look at these paintings, I hope you think of your own experiences and come away with something you want to hold close and feel again.
All of my paintings are a mixed media of some combination of acrylic, airbrush, enamel spray, automotive paint, and sometimes.....even glow-in-the dark paint.
