Mark Khaisman

Mark Khaisman was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1958. He currently lives and works in Philadelpha, USA.

I work on the light easel, applying layers of translucent brown packing tape on clear Plexiglas panels. The tape is used as the most direct way of manipulating the light. I treasure the alchemy whereby a commonplace material is transformed into a fine art medium. Like in high art paintings, I am constructing precise visual images out of chaotic strokes, energizing the space around with a luminous surface glow. The tape allows me to achieve an inexplicable effect of constant vanishing, or instability, or sometimes simply jittering. When installed in a light box, the tape images evoke both the seduction of the cinema screen and the physical presence of minimalist sculptures.

Then I am documenting the images as photographs and printing them on canvas.
I place photography in an intermediary role between the created object and the viewer. While the final product may be a photograph, my image also documents another ephemeral original, formed of completely different material.
