What inspires me is the quality of light and the feeling it conveys - and can I capture it, whether it is a conventional landscape, an impressionist subject, or an abstract...? A painting should have touch of audacity and a sense of authority too.
I love the work of late medieval painters, and sometimes I try to create a sense of what they did, but in the context of a more modern subject and treatment. So often the chiaroscuro was dazzling, but it rarely showed the source of light which illuminated the picture.
Today, I might paint a restaurant or bar, with its electric lights. Can I capture the quality of the electric lights, and make you screw up your eyes slightly at the brightness? Or capture afternoon sunshine in an abstract English landscape. Or, of course, a portrait. But I love the impressionists and early abstracts.
I have waited for years until I had the time I wanted to do painting. And now I can work on a painting until it is as good as I can get it. I always use the best materials for supports, sealants, gesso, paints (Michael Harding) and brushes....I believe you cannot get real quality in your paintings unless everything is as good as it can be. The Moulin de Jean Restaurant in Normandy regularly invites established artists to exhibit - it helps a top restaurant show itself off. I had an Exhibition there 2 years ago and have had another in the spring of 2015.
