My thoughts on women in my work
As an artist my hope is to convey the emotion behind a person at a point in their life rather than their likeness, which I think can distract from what is beneath. My focus in the majority of my work is on the eyes. The window to the soul and the focal point that we are drawn to when communicating with another human being. I find women to be the subject of my life's work. I am still digging into myself to learn the reason for this but I believe that women fill such a broad array of roles, from nurturing mothers to leaders and warriors and struggle for their respect and place in human society.
To me women represent the greatest beauty, love and pain in the universe.
Why I work in charcoal
I primarily work in charcoal and use black pastel for my darkest values. For me Charcoal has a depth of values that I have become deeply connected to. It is malleable like clay and allows me the freedom to sculpt my work freely and allow my creativity to grow with the changing emotions that I feel as the piece comes together.
