ABOUT
EDUCATION

Born 1955 Hythe, Kent, UK. Studio at Spike Island, Bristol and London.

Kate studied at Chelsea School of Art and Goldsmiths College in London, and has subsequently carried out a practice-based PhD in Sculpture.

Her work focuses on an amalgamation of art and anthropology, which has stemmed from living and working in Kenya. This experience has been the main influence on her life and work, for art practice, research and lecturing. Kates work is very much process led, reflecting themes of mortality through fragility, construction/
deconstruction, and recycling.

The materials she uses are often symbolic in concept or form, creating semiotic associations with the concepts and contexts she is working with. The relationship formed with the context is essential to her work, and results in a cultural hybridization of materials, forms and meanings.

She has exhibited nationally and internationally and gained awards from the Arts Council (ACE) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
