Oleg Tolstoy is of Russian origin, based in London he works with the medium of photography challenging the conventional understandings of portraiture, creating the familiar out of the unfamiliar by exploring identity and the act of participation. By stripping down the facade of his participants, beginning to reveal their social and cultural associations within the image itself. He contradicts the expectations of the viewer by exploring an alternative reality and questioning the nature of the portrait.
Oleg graduated from London College of Communication in BA (Hon) Photography. Upon graduating he received the HotShoe magazine, photographic award for the series "˜Hands on Knees'. The same series was then exhibited in Berlin at Edward Lucie- Smith "˜British Art Now'. Recently Oleg exhibited at "˜The Future Can Wait' 2010 which was said to "Promises to reveal tomorrow's art stars" - Metro "Bringing together the freshest and most promising stars of tomorrow" - ArtsHub
