Pascal Barat

My painting work consists in a kind of half-abstract and half-figurative approach. Solid and vulnerable at the same time, the mineral attracts me. Caves, deserts, rock walls, lapidary signs of stonemasons of the Middle Age... these traces, witnesses of disappearance, refer to impermanence. In my work, beyond the rough and coarse aspect of the matter, I seek to reveal an underlying and diffuse delicacy, induced by the play between light and the balance, or imbalance, of the matter. I use natural pigments and minerals mixed with acrylic applied with pad, spatula and scraper mostly on thick paper but also on canvas or wood. My works are not random. Each artwork results of reflection. Realization step gives free rein to the immediacy and spontaneity of the gesture.

Born in Paris to painter parents, I was introduced to painting when I was very young. After attending the Beaux-Arts de Paris workshops, I worked in the press and advertising as a graphic designer before devoting myself to painting since the early 2000s. I have been living and working in Provence, in the South of France, since 2018.
