Guliz Gurel

I am a Turkish artist and neuroscientist originally from Istanbul. I was trained both as an artist (Mimar Sinan University, Fine Arts, Painting) and as a scientist (PhD, Yale University), and my practice has long moved between visual and analytical ways of understanding the world.

The paintings presented here reflect an earlier phase of my work (2010-2020), developed while living away from the Mediterranean. During this period, I worked primarily with oil paint on large canvases, exploring atmosphere, light, and the emotional register of landscape and place. These works were shaped by a sense of distance and longing, and by an interest in how environment, climate, and context quietly influence human presence.

My current practice, which is not represented on Saatchi, has shifted toward digitally constructed composite imagery and conceptual investigations of perception, spatial orientation, and visual systems. This recent work builds on earlier concerns with landscape and presence, while moving toward more abstract, system-based forms.
