Matt Smith

As a Washington native, I’ve spent the majority of my life inspired by the lush ecology of the Pacific Northwest and Inland Northwest. Graduating from The Evergreen State College in 2014 with a BFA, I pursued a career as an independent artist, garnering shows throughout the NW, working on various commissions, and following a tract which began early in my life: seeking knowledge and experience in places throughout the globe via travel. My fascination with cultural bridges and liminality drove me deeper into my love for traveling, though from the start, it was nature that was my driving force.

In 2014, I traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia on an Anthropology/Photography contract sponsored by TESC. I spent a little over one month in each country, ensuring absorption of each place and allowing time for full immersion. Buddhist and Hindu artwork has fascinated me from a young age, and continue to influence my work today. I recently explored Southern Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, where I fell in love with the slow, relaxed, and ultra-vibrant island culture of the Caribbean.
