Matthew Skinner

Born in Norfolk, England, I currently live in London. My style has developed from influences of contemporary and abstract art, ‘outsider art’, brutalist architecture, conceptual art, minimalism and video art.

With a background in Social Science’s I am interested in the relationship between art and a broader human narrative, pertinently one of human destructiveness, a theme which frames my work both thematically and physically. Currently, my interests centre on deconstructing the dichotomy between humankind and nature. As we become ever increasingly aware of the effects humans are having on Earth, the current series of paintings function as an allegory for the pervasive grappling between humanity and the Earth, a dichotomy which has ultimately resulted in a time of environmental fragility and the Anthropocene – the age of humans. By exposing the complexity of human and nonhuman experience, I invite the viewer to question, what does it mean to be human during an age of ecological crisis?
