Artist Joanna Poulson works in oils on canvas and board in 'tonal realism' style. She is a graduate of the Adelaide Central School of Art and has exhibited regularly since 2005. Her work brings a present-day perspective to the significant Australian Tonalist painting movement that progressed throughout the twentieth century, initiated by the influential Max Meldrum.
The extrovert beauty of flowers is Joanna's current muse. She captures the unapologetic colour and unposed, exuberant natural state of blooms at her garden studio in Prospect, South Australia.
Joanna's studio garden brings natural beauty into her life every day. Likewise, she intends her artworks to bring the colours and wonder of the natural world into collectors' homes.
"I’m drawn to colour and in most instances, bright colours which lift the mood of a space, and the viewer."
Photographic effects are an ongoing influence. These include background blur, Kodachrome palettes, enhanced saturation and high contrast. Joanna Poulson's refined, contemporary works have been recognised through commission prizes, grants and awards, and hang in collections around Australia and internationally.
