ABOUT N.M. ENAMEL
Inspired by pieces over a thousand years old, Natia Malazonia pairs old with new by creating original, dynamic work with enamel. Malazonia studied textile design at the Academy of Arts in Tbilisi, Georgia, Her first major inspiration came from the Khakhuli triptych, a repoussé icon of the Virgin Mary created in medieval times. Incorporating precious stones donated by David the Builder, the former King of Georgia, the triptych boasts more than a hundred pieces of cloisonné enamel. Determined to pay homage to this 12th Century masterwork, Malazonia began studying the cloisonné technique, developing a new style that incorporates pigment. Of her approach, Malazonia says, “To me the combination of traditional and contemporary techniques starts new tendencies and open endless space for creativity.”
Malazonia is dedicated to technological processes that distinguish her from contemporary painters. Yet the content of her work depends heavily on her emotional state, which, alongside her affinity for color, is the driving force behind her art. “At each stage of the process I gain new, invaluable experience.”
