Randell Henry was born in 1958 in New Orleans. He decided to become an artist when he was in elementary school. While in junior high school he discovered the works of modern American and European masters in library books and studied them in depth each day while at school. Henry developed a love for abstract art after latching on to artists like Hans Hoffman, Pollock and Motherwell. Months before receiving his MFA degree in painting from L.S.U. Henry went to New Orleans for a weekend in search for a gallery to show his works. At Nahan, the last gallery that he decided to stop in, he was discovered by Kenneth Nahan, who gave him his first major exhibition before graduation. This was the first time the gallery took on an unknown artist for a major exhibition. Actually, the exhibition followed a Picasso exhibition.
Henry received his undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1979 and the MFA in painting from L.S.U. in 1982.,
