Hans Heiner Buhr

Hans Heiner Buhr is a German-born painter based in Tbilisi, Georgia since 1996. His expressionist work is rooted in the Caucasus — horses, riders, caravans, mountain cultures, borderlands, memory, and post-Soviet transformation.

Born in East Berlin in 1965, Buhr studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and has exhibited in Tbilisi galleries since 1998. His paintings combine expressive figuration with themes drawn from long-term lived experience in Georgia and the wider South Caucasus.

Recurring motifs include horses, pack animals, trade routes, mountain landscapes, conflict, memory, and the fragile borderlands between Europe and Asia. Since 2019, Buhr has also been active in crypto art, with works minted on SuperRare, Tezos/objkt, and Bitcoin Ordinals.

His works are held in private collections in Berlin, Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris, London, and Tbilisi. In 2023, his painting Pack Horses New York City was acquired by the Georgian Museum of Fine Arts in Tbilisi.

Hans Heiner Buhr lives and works between Tbilisi and Saguramo.

Studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and previously in Dresden. Developed an independent painting practice between Berlin, Amsterdam and Tbilisi.
