Sally Heard paints patterns to create a field of activity - a visual language. In her work Heard challenges the concept of pattern as decorative and presents the notion of pattern as an artistic language, readable through a process of colour and image interpretation.
During two Greek Government Research Scholarships in Crete in 2000 and 2002, Heard began a new body of work influenced by the designs on excavated Minoan & Mycenean ceramics from the collections of the Hania Archeaological Museum, Iraklion Museum of Crete, British School at Knossos and the British Museum.
In recent years Heard began working on ceramic vases and plates and although not a flat canvas surface, the ceramic works are executed and presented as paintings.
"I believe a group of randomly painted motifs on an opaque colour background creates an ever-changing pattern and field of activity.
"Colour in my work is as important as the motif - both must marry well in order to co-exist. When there is a miss match there is no movement - when there is no movement there is no activity - when there is no activity there is no composition"
