Lucia Simón Medina

Since 2014 I have been working professionally as an artist, visualizing through drawing, crypto algorithms used for digital security. In my aesthetic research, I examine and deal with temporality, thinking processes, and production of technoscientific knowledge.

My work has been evolving around prime numbers for several years because they are an unresolved problem of mathematics and they have been playing a key role within the development of crypto algorithms since the 70s.
Mathematicians have devised a way to link the difficult problem of factoring with the codes that protect the finances of the entire world on the Internet, because of the incredibly long times this requires. Just to give you an idea, factoring a number of more than one hundred digits means having to verify more numbers than the number of particles existing in the observable universe.

Some of my diagrams, to see as work samples on my website, are inspired by RSA, one of the first Public-Key cryptographic systems. These diagrams are possible images of crypto phenomena, which is usually presented as black boxes. Each line connects pairs of prime numbers.
