Collectors come for the light and stay for the depth—across both the photography and the paintings. From luminous landscapes to layered abstractions, the work is united by one constant: light as truth.

For more than 30 years, William R. Stanek has been creating art that helps people slow down, breathe, and see the world differently. Many collectors first discover him through his photography—sunsets, waterfalls, coastlines, black-and-white studies, and luminous natural scenes—but his paintings have become just as meaningful to those who live with his work.

William is known for beautiful natural light, strong composition, and the feeling his work brings into a room. His photographs capture the world honestly and memorably. His paintings take that same sense of light and truth and carry it into color, texture, motion, and memory. Together, the work feels complete: photography rooted in place, painting rooted in presence.

Collectors often know him as the “Michelangelo of Sunsets,” but what keeps people returning to his work is something even more lasting: the way it feels real, personal, and alive. Whether he is photographing a storm-lit horizon or painting an interior where light seems to linger long after someone has left the room...

William R. Stanek is a largely self-taught artist whose education has been shaped by decades of sustained creative practice, travel, observation, and study. Rather than following a conventional academic path in the arts, he developed his visual language through lifelong immersion in photography, painting, writing, and the close study of light, atmosphere, form, and memory. His work is informed not only by technique, but by experience—an artistic formation built over time through discipline, curiosity, and a deep commitment to seeing the world clearly.

His work is also explored in A Master Class in Contemporary Romantic Landscape, a collector- and artist-facing essay series on light, atmosphere, and contemporary Romantic practice. Learn more at his website.

Please Allow Additional Time

Please allow extra time for orders, special requests, and correspondence. At times, he may be working in remote regions with limited cell or internet service.

Established in 1992, our family of galleries represented hundreds of artists and photographers over the years. At the heart of that history is William R. Stanek, whose work continues to define our collection.

William is celebrated for his unique eye, his extraordinary use of natural light, and his ability to capture beauty in a way that feels immediate and true. His sunsets earned him the name “Michelangelo of Sunsets,” but his body of work is much broader than that. His waterfalls, seascapes, landscapes, black-and-white studies, architecture, and mixed-media paintings all show the same care, depth, and sense of wonder.

His paintings add another dimension to the work collectors already love. In Fusion, William explores motion, glow, and layered emotional atmosphere. In And We Stayed In, he turns quiet interior moments into works filled with memory and presence. Across both photography and painting, his art is about more than what something looks like—it is about what it feels like to be there.

His work has reached collectors around the world because it does more than show a place or subject. It helps you feel it. Whether the image is a mountain lake, a coastal horizon, a cathedral in Europe, or an abstract field of color and lig...
