Benjamin Lawson

My work has been inspired by mythologies, philosophies, and artists. Through a variety of subjects ranging from abstract lines, stylized human figures, wild landscapes, to rhythmic urbanscapes, I paint about my deepest struggles and yearnings, reflecting on personal and universal questions associated with identity, crisis, interconnectivity, and spirituality. I typically foreground the process of painting through bold application of pigment on canvas.

I use perspective in a playful way; sometimes flat, sometimes with depth, often both, and together with an emphasis on descriptive or lyrical details, which gives the paintings a soulful character. I mix pigments to make my own colors of various shades, adding space and atmosphere to the story I try to tell in my paintings. Sometimes I try to capture the emotion or mood inherent in expressive art.


Artist Biography:
Mr. Lawson has a BFA in oil painting with subfields in drawing and woodblock printmaking as well as a BA in art history. Recently he has begun exploring acrylic painting as well.
