Jo Beth Kavanaugh

I paint abstractly in the desire to express certain impressions and feelings in a visual concrete way. I am drawn to the elemental organic beauty in the world and attempt to translate that with the materials of choice. I begin with strong impressions of form and color that come into my mind and vision repetitively. Many of these impressions and colors come from nature and my daily environment. However I also paint from the pure emotion in relation to people, places, and events in my life. I begin with these and let the paintings unfold using my vision as well as intuition. This process was self taught through painting in various mediums and experimentation. As I paint I allow that the medium also begins to dictate the outcomes. I feel that this is part of the beauty and interest in the piece. I am drawn to that which interrelates and contrasts in a natural way. I enjoy the organic nature of pieces and the natural tensions that form in the work. I am interested in how these purposeful and more consequential marks form a unique composition that reaches me as well as others. I believe that my work heals myself as well as the others intended. I studied design at UGA and graduated with a degree in interior design. I took many art classes at various universities including Boston University, Corcoran School of Art, and Parsons. I eventually interned for almost 2 years studying watercolor and acrylic painting. From there moved into painting oils and this is where now my medium of choice. My work is influenced by starting as a watercolorist.
