Skulskaya Julia is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, collage, textiles, and embroidery. Born in Dzhankoy, Crimea, in 1989 and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia, she studied academic painting and graphic design, forging a distinctive artistic voice that merges classical techniques with experimental contemporary approaches. Since relocating to Belgrade in 2023, her work has embraced new cultural influences while continuing to explore themes of memory, trauma, sensuality, and political transformation.
Julia’s work often blends figurative imagery with archival materials and found photographs, investigating the complexities of human psychology, memory, and the lasting impact of political change. Inspired by the cultural shifts of post-Soviet Russia, her recent series Coup d’État Girls reflects on the upheavals of the Perestroika era, drawing from personal history, underground erotic media, and candid images of everyday life. Her work invites deep contemplation of what it means to be human in times of rupture.
