Susanna Kraus, born in Munich. Actress, artist, photographer and visionary mind behind the IMAGO Camera.
The IMAGO Camera is a 7 x 3 metre walk-in large-format camera, the only one of its kind in the world. It was developed in the 1970s by physicist Werner Kraus and is now located in Susanna Kraus' art space in Berlin Kreuzberg. With the help of the IMAGO Camera, she creates life-size portraits and still lifes, each developed on direct positive paper and therefore unique.
Trained as an actress at the Otto Falkenberg Acting School in Munich in the early 1980s, Susanna Kraus shifted her focus to photography from 2005 onwards. Not least due to the rediscovery of the IMAGO Camera developed in the 1970s, which Florian Hufnagl, head of the New Collection at the Pinakothek der Moderne, kept in his collection. He also supported Susanna Kraus in reactivating this unique photographic medium of self-portrayal.
Susanna Kraus organised several exhibitions there.
Self-taught, she explored the intricacies of the special photographic processes of the IMAGO Camera and thus combines performing art, scenography and directing with analogue photographic imaging using her 25 years of stage experience.
