Ann-Marie Brown

I paint in a studio on the edge of the Salish sea, carrying my coffee cup every morning past fruit trees and cedars into a space with soaring ceilings that feels like a very private chapel.

The works themselves are painted in encaustic and oil. This became my chosen medium because of the unpredictability of the process. Inevitable miscalculations disrupt my intention for a piece and open a dialogue with the emerging image. The process doesn’t allow me to visualize the painting and methodically arrive at it. This provides an opportunity for the active painting mind to push the work to a place that wasn’t consciously available. I believe that the mind that’s painting is more interesting than the mind that’s thinking about painting.
