Josephine Van As

Born in South America (Suriname) in 1956. Josephine Vanas has been exhibiting since 1996. The world staged by her is a world of fragments. Her paintings, which mainly represent hands, feet, shoulders, necks - purposefully leaving out the face - are zoomings on to the human body which display a part for the whole.

Her work is somehow contradictory: both highly expressive and strangely enigmatic. At the same time hiding and exposing their subjects, realistic and dreaming.
The brushwork itself seems bold and soft at the same time. The colours warm and cold. Her work contains a lot of creative tension, like an explosion and then again they are funny and soothing.
