Artist Statement
Color speaks before thought arrives. My paintings are not planned — they gestate. It may be weeks or months, but when a piece is ready to become alive, it comes whether I like it or not. I am less a painter than a witness to my own work. I consider myself a colorist above all else: someone who believes color carries emotional weight that language simply cannot reach. With over 60 works behind me, I paint because the feeling that drives me has never found another home.

Artist Bio
Born in Brooklyn, New York, and now based in Denver, Colorado, William A. Viola came to painting through a life lived close to art without yet making it. As Purchasing Manager at Lee’s Art Shop in New York — directly across from the Art Students League, where he also studied — he occupied a unique position at the intersection of craft, commerce, and creativity.
It was there that he developed personal relationships with some of the most influential figures in fine art materials, including Michael Harding and Robert Gamblin. Most significantly, his relationship with Mark Golden gave him direct access to the evolution of professional acrylic paint it...
