Artistic approach:
An artist at the frontier between lyrical abstraction and conceptual art, Elisabeth von Wrede has a clear artistic identity. Her dazzling white, created with square brush strokes, is recognisable anywhere. More than a signature, this white square is her brand, it is her ‘cosa mentale’, her mindset.
Have you ever noticed that what is hidden creates desire? That sums up the quintessence of my artistic approach: raising the mask on secrets, peering through the keyhole, savouring the delicious forbidden fruit. The hardest thing is to hide that which normally should be seen, because all artistic creation has the ultimate goal of showing, expressing, even exposing. I just have to awaken interest, to show a bit of what I want to hide, so that the visible suggests the hidden. Which is how a double reading is naturally imposed on my work, a reading where the viewer is confronted by two worlds: a more aesthetic world where I work on the search for harmony in colours, rhythm, the balance of forces and the emotions radiating out; and a second, more conceptual world, where the veil settles across emotions, protecting the intimate and sublimating the modesty symbolised by the white square. Elisabeth von Wrede was born in Germany in 1968.
Passionate about creation in all its forms, above all painting, she was influenced by artists from her country like Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker, who knew her family. For several years, Elisabeth studied art and discovered painting alongside the Japanese artist Keiji Uematsu.
Upon arriving in France, she supplemented her training, studying bookbinding and painting on leather with artists like Sün Evrard and Florent Rousseau. Following training with Thibault de Réimpré, she chose to devote her time and her life to painting and artistic creation.
Since 1989, Elisabeth von Wrede has lived and created in France.

“Firstly, colour, projected onto the canvas as you would pour out your emotions, waves of vibrant and dynamic colours. In this violent part of her work, passion rules and reveals the most primitive instincts. Then virginal white arrives, with little square brush strokes, punctuating the coloured jungle and soothing the taxing turmoil of emotions. The art of Elisabeth von Wrede is a permanent duality between violence and peace, circles and squares, colour and white, passion and serenity. A figurative abstraction where a subtly revealed slice of intimacy hides.
