My re-entry into sculpture and drawing, after a two-decade detour as a film making instructor and Hollywood indie film studio executive, began with this "Bungalow" and "Foot Stool" series. The tension between form and function has always intrigued me but the discrepancies I am currently exploring have less to do with functionality and more to do with how the surface treatments as well as alteration of scale and context subvert the meaning of a familiar architectural silhouette.
The diminutive but iconic green houses from Monopoly, a favorite game from my childhood, informed the design of the Bungalows, although blown up considerably from their original size. The wrapping material is downloaded off the web while the wrapping and taping is done quickly, with as little pre-visualization as possible. Finally, since at some point in the creative food chain, all art becomes commoditized, I would like to think that I am doing the potential consumer a favor by wrapping each work before the transaction takes place.
A series of related drawings (coming on line soon) is based on SketchUp renderings of the bungalows but re-worked extensively in Photoshop before further manual alteration during and after the printing process. Budget...
