New York based China-born artist 石村 Schutze (aka Stone) uses the word Shi-Cun-Kuai,meaning “Shi Cun Cube” in Chinese, to describe his innovative method of oil painting. This method uses premixed oil colors to create thousands of small three-dimensional cubes on canvas to portrait icons, such as the Chinese and US currency, Marilyn Monroe, Buddha, Peking opera masks, and the cross. Schutze’s paintings, with their sculpting brushstrokes, and exuberant color patterns, give the impression of abstract art from up close and figurative art from a distance. Interested in creating a perfect balance between pop art and fine art, Schutze conveys a sense of complexity and exquisity.
