Cara Roxanne

I am a Devonshire based artist who, over the past half decade, has been creating black and white images with inks, frequently inspired by stories, symbols and myths.

Over the last two years of painting, the work has broadened into a greater investigation of colour, and a challenge to my own preconceived perceptions of how an image emerges. Surprising myself, as well as the viewer, is crucial.

Using oils, acrylics, chalks, pastels and inks, I engage narrative and image to create connections to the world within and around me. Exploring the duality of the wild -the creative and spontaneous, with the logical, pre-planned and organised - I attempt to engage a creative tension between order and chaos. Questioning how we can exist in nature without controlling it.

Whether working on miniatures or large canvases most paintings take a few weeks to be fully conceived, as the building of layers of paint and colour are added over time and new areas are constructed. Occasionally paintings begin as drawings or doodles which grow and transform as they are applied into paint.
