My practice considers a relationship between digital accuracy or control and intuitive rule based mark-making activities.
The motifs in the paintings do not need to be understood. Their origins or context are often a result of circumstance, chance or discovery, and sit somewhere between the figurative and the abstract.
I frequently use stencils to provide forms, structures and motif that I include in painting; these can be cut by hand or by computer from digital files. These forms, once found, are often recycled and used in several paintings.
In my painting I explore different paint application processes that can be combined with or without the use of a stencil. I explore the material qualities of paint, working with colour. I try to avoid having a narrative in the work. The paintings can be seen as abstract while I regard them as constructions for the viewer to explore and discover rather than to read.
