ABOUT
EDUCATION

1961, Italy, Leo Vitale in his art has always been interested in the interaction of architecture and art through the manipulation space, shape, colour and perception. This is determined in part by placing the same element several times in a dynamic movement across the painting space. The various marks take place and connect each other while the physical substrate itself act as placeholders, which can be seen as analogous to architectural space or landscape. One of the appeals of this geometric lexicon is its capacity to define complex visual information and develop other specific aspects of the visual experience as the exploration of space while maintaining focus on the materiality of the surface.

Vitale studied at the Universit Statale di Architettura , where he met as professors prominent architects such as Alessandro Mendini and Massimiliano Fuksas.
In the mid1980s, following travels in Europe and living in Canada for almost a decade, Vitale started to create paintings that combined elements of abstraction and space. He was attracted by the works of Mark Rothko and Sol Lewitt.
After moving back to Italy in the late 1990s his compositions became more elaborate and the paint surface denser and more textured. His painting technique took inspiration from the ancient Roman encausto technique mixed with strong use of oils.,
