Shimon Kontarge (b. 1962, Tashkent, Ubekistan), completed his studies in art at the Taskent Art College in 1985. Following his immigration to Israel in 1991, from 1997 he participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Israel and the USA. From 2000-2003, Kontarge worked on the design and décor of the Silver Spring Jewish Center, Maryland, including more than 15 paintings and murals.
The colorful mosaic-like paintings of Kontarge in the exhibition are executed in a mixed media technique. The themes and figures are taken from Greek Mythology and the Jewish Legends. The sense of harmony, the interlocking, flowing line, and the flat shading are reminiscent of the works of Moshe Propes (1922-1985), but here the radiant colors of Kontarge project a sense of fantasy to the viewer.
The Jerusalem Theatre exhibition includes 14 large works and murals. ■
