Albert Nii Nortey Dowuona – alniinod (b. 1987) is an artist who lives and works in Accra, Ghana. He earned his BFA in Painting and Sculpture from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi in 2010. Nii Nortey explores materials that have with them “voices” or “narratives” where he employs them into his socio-political narrative. These materials come as everyday and already-made items. Some of the items he has explored on within his art practice include the potter’s wheel, fabric, newspapers, audio-visuals, and popular musical tunes in his works.
Nii Nortey is currently exploring the idea of Social Identity and Authenticity where the “African-print fabric” becomes an allegory to comment on the complex nature of identity. The fabric’s history; its origin, production, designs, consumers, usage, representation and its brands create a narrative of mixed identity and authenticity.
