Anup Shah

I received the National Geographic call that most photographers dream of (for my first assignment for the magazine) in 2001. This was followed by 7 more assignments and the publication of three large-format books for the New York art publisher, Abrams. I was also featured in The World’s Top Wildlife Photographers book (RotoVision 2004) and in Horzu magazine (February 2010) as one of the five best wildlife photographers in the world. I am one of the 10 ‘masters’ featured in the book Masters of Nature Photography (September 2013).
Over time, I have continually assessed what I was doing and have evolved to take a more reflective approach to my photography.
In photographing wild animals, I think I have one advantage over other fields of photography in that I sense authenticity in their personalities. To me, the mental state of a wild animal is neither covered by a mask that a human subject is tempted to wear nor adulterated by human influence that a captive animal acquires.
To lend voice to the mental state of a wild animal, I have established an approach that is very personal. I try to be accepted by wild animals, be intimate with them, and sense their mind.
