Aphrodite Papadatou

Greek-born, British-bred Aphrodite Papadatou is a self-taught artist whose unique talent to "˜puke up feelings and states of mind' finds expression through the media of painting and print; when she is working, she is Punk with Paints. Her work is brutal and humorous; always expressive; and often as impressionistic as it is illustrative; full of the rich contradictions that emanate from her emotional situations and critical attitude to societal structures and the establishment.

Aphrodite was born in September 1982 in Athens to a family of artists, political activists and journalists; Her father is the painter and sculptor Dionysis Papadatos. She dropped out of art school and read politics and history at university in Manchester where she was also in a punk band. She worked in music, fashion and politics and started drawing again in the summer of 2013.

Punk with Paints' art is as opulently sexual as it is political; her aesthetic as refined as it is raw; it is about identity, location and dislocation. It addresses modern fetishisms, sexual and social identity, and records impressions of friends and lovers.
