This series, The Passage, came about as the result of having received commissions to photograph two of the historic east west train routes, the Empire Builder and the California Zephyr. The process of following and examining these routes took me into places I would never had thought to venture on my own. In fact, judging by the access that was available much of the time, I suspect that many of these places were rarely seen except by the train traveler. The nature of the work allowed me to look at landscape in a new way. Instead of interpreting a personal landscape as I had done for years, I was able to study the way man had worked with the land to traverse those long miles. There was a beauty and unity that I had not anticipated.
