The plumage is mostly white, with black on the wings. Adults have long red legs and long, pointed red beaks and measure an average of 100–115 cm from the tip of the beak to the end of the tail and a wingspan of 155–215 cm. The two subspecies, which differ slightly in size, breed in Europe (north to Finland), northwest Africa, southwest Asia (east to southern Kazakhstan) and southern Africa. The white stork is a long-distance migratory bird, wintering in Africa from sub-Saharan Africa to South Africa or even the Indian subcontinent.
