Chairs
Scott Shoemate is an emerging southern California artist based in San Diego whose works explore and critique the taken-for-granted terrible beauty of much of everyday life. Shoemate’s current work exploring the limits of wood is inspired by the the emotional core of the tree that remains long after it is felled such that a chair is recast to depict an emotion or experience. As he works, he strips away the pretension, masculinity, and rigidity, revealing the life-sustaining soul of the piece, and in turn, critiques human complacency.
