Icons: Las Virgencitas (Our Beloved Virgins)
This series is about identity politics; a visual social critique examining the legacy of gender politics in relation to race, body image, cultural aesthetics, and overall social issues, resulting in exploitative structures. The series consists of mixed media portraits of 12 sexualized virgins which serve as ironic analogies that convey the incongruity between sexist religious standards, and the overtly sexualized female constantly promoted by mainstream media.
