On Reflection

I began most of these drawings beside rivers, looking at fugitive reflections of clouds and trees. Responding to the fluidity and formlessness of the reflections, I lay in washes with a loaded brush. Waves and ripples on the water’s surface entice a rhythmic counterpart in my own actions. Then on the washes drawn marks cascade, one over the other, affected by the sounds and movements of dragon flies, cicadas and birds. And the river flows to the sea. As Heraclitus observed, everything flows. All things are in flux.
