These intricate paintings are of South Sudanese ladies that I have the pleasure to know. As you may already know, South Sudan is a fairly new country established in 2011 and was still in the process of solidifying her identity when it became embroiled in an ongoing civil war. In these paintings my aim is to bring out the rich tradition and at the same time, portray the clash of cultures (Arab and Sub Saharan). The image transfers (on the lips & cigarettes) are of a backgammon which my family owns. My family hails from Lebanon which also has had an Arab influence.
