About The Artwork

I wanted to create an image of a woman looking through her purse projecting both aloofness and confidence. Part-way through making her, she started to take on a somewhat masculine feel to me; her legs weren't as shapely as I would have liked, and her hand and face were a little larger than what I had in mind, too. Juxtaposed with the strong red lines and projecting a detached assurance, when finished with Candee, I realized that she was either transsexual, transgender, gay or a transvestite. The red lines behind her are duct tape. Her dress, purse, bracelets, and shoes are made from fabrics, and her necklace is made from a real necklace. And I'm sure you can tell that her stockings are made from lace. Candee is framed in a 1 1/2" (shadow box) matte black frame, and if you'd like to see her framed, I'd be happy to send you a photo.

Drawing and painting since the age of six, I have always been involved with art in one way or another. My mom (Arline Wagner) is an accomplished artist as well as my brother (Neil Blender), and their successes with their art have been inspirational for me. As a senior in high school I was super lucky to have been awarded two scholarships to the Pasadena Art Center College of Design where I got to attend four hour classes on Saturdays throughout the school year where we would draw from live models wearing costumes or bathing suits. It was probably one of the funnest art experiences that I've ever had, and it was a great intro to life drawing. Initially, I wanted to be a fashion illustrator, but I got sidetracked with this and that. Over the years I have taken a variety of classes ranging from drawing, painting, ceramics, and printmaking to stained glass, photography, computer graphics, and art history. And although I’m more of a graphic artist after years of classes, and doing freelance work, I have recently gotten back into fine art with my mixed media fabric women, and my part-time obsession of photographing all things having to do with liquid and light.
