About The Artwork

A bunch of hand made family doilies handed down to me was the spark for this body of work. This piece, Cyano+ #2, is composed by two layers. One layer is a cyanotype and the other layer is a hand cut paper. For the cyanotype I used a hand made family doily passed down through generations. The other layer is a hand cut paper of a design I created by using a picture of my shadow pushing my twin’s stroller and the idea of a web. This piece is my interpretation of a doily, an “ergohiro” meaning “work of the hands” in Greek, and it represents to me the love and care transmitted from one generation to the next. Cyanotype is a camera-less photographic process used extensively from the 1880’s through the 1920’s. The process was later used widely by architects and engineers for the creation of blueprints. A mixture of two chemicals, ferric ammonium and potassium ferricyanide, is used for coating and sensitizing the paper. Then the chosen objects are placed on top of the paper and the set design goes in a UV light box or is being exposed to the sunlight. The action of light allows the creation of a silhouette effect. The result of the process is a print with beautiful Prussian blue tones. Through the process of cyanotype a design can be reproduced as many times as one wishes. Nevertheless there are not two cyanotypes identical because each piece is individually treated and the visual result is unique. Foam board (1/2 inch) placed between the two layers keeps them apart, allowing to the shadows created by the change of the light to be a vital part of the artwork. Her artwork has also been selected to be featured in Early Winter 2020 Artist Showcase article on https://artsyshark.com Since March 2022 Despina is a member of National Association of Women Artists. Despina lives and works in New York. My recent art work consists of works on paper. I create my pieces by combining two layers of hand cut paper or by using one layer of hand cut paper combined with a second layer of acrylic painting on paper or a cyanotype. Most recently punctured text has been introduced on my pieces. Using pictures of my shadow as well the idea of the web I design intricate geometric motifs. Childhood memories of complex geometric patterns in crochets and embroideries, a common practice among the female members of my family, inform my work. In my artwork I explore the multiple possibilities of different combinations generated by the use of a single geometric motif. Repetition, changes in shape and scale unveil abstract artworks. For this particular body of works titled “Stroller-o-ptera” the inspiration was a picture of my shadow pushing my twin stroller. “Stroller-o-ptera” is an autoschediastic word pursuant to “Lepidoptera”, an order of insects that include butterflies. This word is composed by an English word “stroller” and the word “ptera” meaning “wings” in Greek. In this word the two languages that I speak in my every day life are combined. Transformation is a notion inherent to butterflies and a theme that I also explore in my art works. Through the process of paper cutting the paper is being transformed to a lace like surface.
