Does The Angle Between Two Walls Have A Happy Ending? Collage

The work was inspired by the collage works of Greek Literature Nobel Laureate Odysseas Elytis and the poetry of Giannis Ritsos. In his poem The Moonlight Sonata, Giannis Ritsos describes the symbolic encounter between an urbane old poetess and an attractive young man. In what is effectively a monologue the woman describes the strain of having spent her life shielding herself from collapsing under the weight of suppressed desires. The image that she paints is one of having to prop various household objects up against each other in a whimsical structure in order to prevent her house from caving in on her. When the monologue ends we find the young man departing and the old poetess willingly remaining at home, in spite of her repeated pleas to accompany him on an evening walk. In a re-reading of the poem, the artist imagines the poetess (or one of her descendants) outside, free from the objects and the constraints designed to weigh them down. She is engaged in a seemingly different struggle, but with the same objective. Through this re-reading the artist explores the elusive nature of human liberty.
