Dr. Rob Burton is a visual artist, critical thinker and academic who explores themes of memory, loss and transformation through mixed media, fabric and printmaking that often utilise found objects integrated with innovations in analogue techniques and digital technologies. His works capture an essence of memory coalescing with imagination in the nostalgia of memory and longing often portraying people, place and spaces in textual textile narratives. He graduated in Fashion and Textiles at Liverpool Polytechnic in 1987 before completing his Master’s degree in Textile Design in 1989. Rob has recently been awarded a Phd for his practice-based textile art investigation ‘An Exploration of Trace, memory and Post Memory through Making, Meaning and Materiality’. Rob has recently exhibited internationally in group exhibitions, biennials and triennials in the USA, Eastern Europe and the UK. Artworks are currently being shown in exhibitions curated by the Argentine Centre for textile Arts and in the ‘Per Filo E Per Segno’ exhibition at the Fabbrica della Ruota, Biella, Italy. Since 2014 Rob has regularly collaborated with international screendance company WECreate who specialise in site-specific interdisciplinary works inspired by their shared fascination of extreme landscapes, place, and narratives of sites. Our journeys encompass urban and rural landscapes, seeking to discover the unseen, the in-betweenness and the things that are in transformation. Rob’s current projects brings together digital and traditional screen practices in the investigation of the literary enchantment of magical realism and nostalgic narrative in large scale textile hangings.
