About The Artwork

The Green Sun is smiling at you. It might not look like it does. It might look like it is sad. But it does. It just does it in this funny way. That looks sad... It was not supposed to have a "face". It was supposed to be black. And to be called "The Black Sun". With colourful rays of torn paper coming from something hidden behind a completely black circle. Something mysterious, unknown, maybe even scary. But it was not supposed to be... The face suddenly emerged from behind the "black sun", that was no longer "black" anymore. A face of a child, the one who doesn't quite understand what hurts, and why it hurts, the one that doesn't quite know what is happening to him and why. But he is not trying to find it now. He is just there, shedding his "green light" on anything around. Like a Green Sun...

I was born in 1962 in Moscow, Russia, and I live and work in Geneva, Switzerland. Apart from a couple of years at an art school for kids (when I was about 5-7), I have never studied art. Over the years though it became one of my many interests and inspirations; it comes and goes, and comes again. What you see here has been mainly created in 2001-2003...I dont know where what I do comes from. One can analyse it, psychoanalyse and rationalise it to death. And it will certainly be quite amusing. But entirely beyond the point Whatever I do makes no sense. I simply pick up photos, pictures from magazines and newspapers, cut them to pieces and then put them together again. And when they fit, I glue them on the black paper. Thats all. There are no ideas behind, no plan, no conscious wish to express something. How do I know when they fit? I just know, thats all. I dont create out of nothing. I take something that has already existed, then turn it around and play with it. Ive been doing that since I was a child. In the process I discovered that everything could be something else. So now, when I look around, I can see a lot of things I could never see before... This playing is not totally innocent though. It always involves destroying, cutting to pieces, disassembling, almost murdering what others have done. This has always been like that. And this is probably what makes some of my works violent... Whatever I do makes no sense. So, in a way, my works are a sort of a NonSense Gallery: a place where you can see whatever you see without trying to make any sense out of it. I can tell you what I saw, but then youll start asking why? and I wont be able to tell you. Simply because I have no idea...
